California Native Garden and Orchard
San Fernando Valley
This was a delightful project to design and install. The garden is located in a very hot and exposed corner of the San Fernando Valley. The space had lain idle for many years and some native oaks had taken hold. We kept the oaks and designed around them creating a pleasant space that combined fruit trees, a wild hedgerow, with an assortment of California Natives.
Self-seeding wildflowers create an ever changing tapestry of colour each Spring. The fruit trees have dedicated irrigation bubblers and the native plants a separate irrigation system as they require considerably less water than edibles. More images...

This unique garden sits atop a delightful hill with 300-degree views in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. The open location allows for sensational sunlight exposure year round. In the height of summer it also means one needs to skillfully plant so that certain heat sensitive plants can survive the intense mid-afternoon temperatures. More details...
Perfect Brentwood Garden Location
Brentwood, CA
This garden was created from a large lawn at one end of the two-acre property. The location is perfect. It gets respite from the afternoon sun in summer after at least eight hours of morning exposure and in winter, when the decdous trees lose their leaves, the garden get ample low light from the winter sun. Palisades Potager
A (somewhat) formal vegetable garden
This garden has been a delight to develop. A bright sunny open location but with a maritime climate that keeps the garden a little cool at the height of summer. It was installed in July 2008 and we used all the native soil mixed with a large amount of compost. More details and images...
