Perfect Brentwood Garden Location
Brentwood, CA
This garden was created from a large lawn at one end of the two-acre property. The delightful red brick California bungalow lies 25ft across the lawn from the vegetable garden. The location is perfect. It gets respite from the afternoon sun in summer after at least eight hours of morning exposure and in winter, when the decdous trees lose their leaves, the garden get ample low light from the winter sun.
A large Victorian armillary already existed and I used it as the focal point, design and position wise. A simple low and partially bowed redbrick wall was created to border the garden. A small wood fence sits atop the wall with a copper piping rail running through under the top section. As this pipe ages it will match the armillary and handcrafted tuteurs which also have some copper inserts to integrate the design.
Each of the large vegetable beds are lined with cut stone and tapered at each end to suggest foliage; a design addition suggested by the client. At the far end of the garden a very wide corner bed hosts artichokes and an eccentric collection of flowering perennials that are used indoors.
The color palette is purple, white and variegated foliage. A simple stone mill fountain and an outdoor wooden dinner table and chairs complete the design.
